When a repair in Rex turns into a remodel

Many remodels start as repairs. A slow leak under a bathroom vanity leads to soft subfloor, the subfloor leads to new tile, and soon the whole room is on the table. Precision Remodeling helps Rex homeowners decide how far to take that kind of project, from a targeted fix to a full kitchen, bathroom or basement remodel.

We look at the damage and the materials around it, explain what has to be replaced and what is optional, and write the estimate so each part of the work sits on its own line. You can stop at the repair or keep going, and either way you know what each piece costs before it starts. Any change after work begins is written up and approved first.

Clayton County rules that apply to plumbing work

Rex is in Clayton County. The county's building permit section, located in the P.K. Dixon Building annex in Jonesboro, issues building, mechanical, electrical and plumbing permits for residential remodels, repairs and new construction, and it confirms that contractors carry Georgia licenses.

County code treats a fix and a replacement differently. Clearing a stoppage or repairing a leak needs no permit, but putting new material in place of a defective concealed drain, waste, vent or water pipe is new work that requires a permit and inspections (Sec. 18-41). In the vanity example above, stopping the leak would be exempt, while replacing a corroded drain line inside the wall would not.

Sewer hookups involve CCWA. A building sewer permit from CCWA is required to connect to its system, the county building inspector oversees the connection and testing, and service starts only after CCWA's fees are paid and the inspector signs off (Sec. 98-5).
