Interior Painting in Rex, GA
Most walls are not perfectly smooth. Many carry a light spray texture, and when a hole or crack is patched, the repaired spot can look flat and obvious once paint goes on. For interior painting in Rex homes, matching the texture around repairs is often what decides whether a wall looks freshly painted or freshly patched.
Why a smooth patch stands out on a textured wall
Paint does not hide a change in surface. A patch sanded perfectly smooth in the middle of a bumpy wall catches light differently from everything around it, and the difference shows at certain angles even after two coats. Joint compound also absorbs paint differently from painted drywall, which can make the spot look duller or shinier than its surroundings. The fix for the first problem is matching texture; the fix for the second is primer.
Recognizing the texture on your walls
- Smooth: no visible pattern, and the most demanding finish to patch invisibly.
- Orange peel: a fine, even bumpiness like the skin of an orange, sprayed from a hopper or texture gun.
- Knockdown: splatters of compound flattened with a trowel, leaving flat-topped islands.
- Hand-applied textures: swirls, stipple or skip-trowel patterns made with brushes or knives.
Ceilings often have a different texture from the walls in the same room, and a house may have more than one wall texture if rooms were finished at different times. Each one is noted during the estimate visit.
Blending patches into the existing texture
Once a repair is finished flat and dry, texture is rebuilt over it. Orange peel and knockdown are usually re-created with spray texture, adjusted for thickness and spatter size, and tested on scrap board before it touches the wall. Hand textures are copied with the same kind of tool that made them. The new texture is feathered past the edges of the patch so there is no hard border.
A perfect match is not always possible, especially on walls with heavy or irregular texture. When a wall has many repairs, re-texturing the entire wall can give a more even result than dozens of separate patches, and that choice belongs in the scope.
Repair level, nail pops and stained drywall
The repair level for each room spells out how much will be done: fill nail holes and small dings, patch and texture larger damage, or re-texture or skim-coat whole walls. Nail pops are secured with a screw and touched up with matching texture. Cracks are taped rather than simply filled. Stained drywall is sealed with a stain-blocking primer, and drywall that has gone soft from water is cut out and replaced before any texture goes on.
Primer, sheen and coats over repaired areas
Every patch and every newly textured spot is primed so it takes paint the same way as the rest of the wall. Skipping primer on compound is the usual reason for flashing, where repairs show as dull blotches. Sheen matters here too. Flat and matte finishes hide small texture differences well, while semi-gloss walls highlight them, so sheen by room is chosen with the repair work in mind. The number of coats follows coverage.
Protection, trim and the order of work
Spray texture travels, so floors, trim, windows and anything left in the room are covered more carefully than for painting alone. Repairs and texture come first, then sanding and priming, then cut-in and finish coats on the walls, with trim painted afterward. Glossy trim is scuffed or deglossed so the new enamel grips, and any knots or water marks on it are sealed.
Colors, the repair level for each wall and the number of coats are agreed before work starts, so the crew is not waiting on decisions halfway through a room.

Questions about wall texture and painting in Rex
Can a patch on a knockdown wall be made to disappear?
Usually it can be blended closely. The patch is finished flat, then knockdown texture is sprayed on and flattened with a trowel to match the size and spacing of the existing pattern. After primer and paint, most patches are hard to find. Very heavy or uneven textures are harder to copy, and in those cases re-texturing the whole wall may look more even.
What is the difference between orange peel and knockdown texture?
Orange peel is a fine, even pattern of small bumps sprayed onto the wall and left as it lands. Knockdown starts with larger splatters of compound that set briefly and are then flattened with a wide knife, leaving smooth, flat-topped islands. Knockdown is more pronounced and hides more flaws; orange peel is subtler and easier to wipe clean.
Should textured walls be skim-coated smooth before painting?
Only if you want a smooth look. Skim coating buries texture under thin coats of joint compound that are sanded flat, which takes considerably more labor than painting over the existing pattern. It makes sense when the texture is badly damaged or no longer suits your taste. If you simply want fresh color, priming repairs and matching the existing texture is the simpler route.
