LVP Flooring Installation in Lake City, GA

Taking up tired carpet and putting down luxury vinyl plank changes how a room looks, sounds and cleans. LVP flooring installation in Lake City homes that have had carpet for years is a little different from swapping one hard floor for another, because carpet hides a lot: staples, tack strip, old stains and a subfloor that was never meant to be seen.

Rigid-core plank is a click-lock floating floor. It needs a base that is flat, clean and dry, and carpet forgives problems that plank will not. Below is how we plan the move from a soft floor to a hard one.

What comes up with the carpet

Carpet, pad, tack strip and the staples that held the pad all have to go. Tack strip is nailed around the edge of every room, and each nail leaves a hole or splinter that gets pulled or set flush. Pad staples come out one at a time, since a single staple head left standing can show through a plank or stop a joint from closing.

On concrete, tack strip is often held with hardened nails that chip the slab as they are pried up. Those chips are patched so the perimeter ends up as flat as the middle of the room. The old pad is never reused under plank; it is far too soft and would let the locking edges flex.

What the bare subfloor shows

With the carpet gone, plywood or OSB may show dark rings from a pet accident or a leaking toilet, seams that have swelled, or nails that have backed out and squeak. Soft or delaminated panels are replaced, squeaky spots are screwed down and raised seams are sanded flat.

Then a long straightedge goes across each room in several directions. Carpet bridges a dip without complaint, but a floating floor rests on it, and joints over a hollow move with every step until they wear. Low spots are filled and humps are ground down to the tolerance printed in the product’s instructions. Where the floor is a slab, a moisture test comes before the planks are ordered.

Door clearance and heights at each doorway

Doors hung over carpet usually have room to spare, so trimming them is less common when carpet becomes plank. What changes is the height relationship with the rooms next door. Carpet and pad often stand taller than the plank replacing them, so hall tile or a bathroom floor that once met carpet at a tack-strip edge may now sit a little above or below the new surface.

We measure those adjoining heights and choose a profile for each opening: a T-molding where both floors are level, a reducer where one is higher, an end cap at a sliding door or hearth. Door casings are undercut so the planks slip beneath them instead of being scribed around the trim.

Carpeted stairs and landings

Stairs can keep their carpet while the rooms around them change, or they can be converted too. Converting usually means pulling the carpet, cutting back the rounded nose on each tread, and fitting plank on treads and risers with a matching stair nose glued or fastened in place. The top step and any landing are where room flooring and stair flooring meet, so that nosing is planned before the main floor is laid.

Trim, built-ins and the gap at the walls

Carpet was tucked under the baseboard. A floating floor instead stops short of the wall by the expansion space the manufacturer sets, and that edge needs covering. Shoe molding nailed to the baseboard is the quickest answer. Pulling the baseboard and resetting it lower gives a cleaner line but adds caulk and paint touch-up to the job.

Bookcases, window seats and other built-ins get the same treatment: the plank stops at their base with a gap rather than running under them, because weight pinning a floating floor can make it buckle somewhere else.

Underlayment and plank thickness

Many rigid-core planks come with a pad bonded to the back, and a second foam layer under them usually goes against the instructions. Planks without one may call for a specific underlayment. A slightly thicker plank feels more solid, which people coming from carpet tend to notice, but extra thickness does not fix an uneven subfloor. Choose color and texture with samples on the bare subfloor in your own light, not on top of the old carpet.

If a room is better suited to a different resilient floor, our pages on sheet vinyl and vinyl tile in Lake City and laminate flooring describe how those go in.

Carpet-to-plank questions

Is the subfloor under old carpet usually ready for LVP?

Often it needs some attention first. Carpet hides squeaks, swollen seams, stains from old leaks and small dips that never mattered under a soft floor. Once everything is pulled, we check for loose or damaged panels and run a straightedge for flatness. Repairs and leveling are listed in the estimate, so you can see exactly what preparation the rooms need before the planks go down.

Can the existing carpet pad stay under the new planks?

No. Carpet pad is much too soft for a click-lock floor. It lets the planks sink and flex, which strains the locking joints until they gap or break. The pad, its staples and the tack strip all come out. If the plank you choose has no attached backing, the manufacturer will name the underlayment that should be used instead.

Will a room sound different after carpet is replaced with plank?

Yes, a hard floor is livelier than carpet. Footsteps and voices carry more, especially in rooms with little furniture. Planks with an attached acoustic pad soften the sound, and area rugs help in bedrooms and living spaces. A flat, well-prepared subfloor also matters, because planks that rock over dips make a hollow clicking noise underfoot.

Plan the change from carpet
